Actually the ring flash is quite versatile. You can also mount it off camera of course.
It's actually great for shooting outdoors/sunlight...used a lot that way by fashion photogs.
The AB version is sweet...light...can easily hand hold it.
I made a mod to it so I could easily attach/detach the camera from it.
I think the lens opening is about5 inches across....but will have to measure it. I can shoot thru it with my Tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 with the lens hood on.
AB also has some attachable softbox/diffusers....i.e. "Moon unit".
As far as light output....very high. Supposeably it has the same wattage as the AB strobe AB800(which I have two of)...but can say...maybe due to the 'ring' shape of the flash tube on the ring flash...it seems to be much brighter.
